Bipolar/Mood Disorders
Affective disorders are a set of psychiatric disorders, also called mood disorders.
The main types of affective disorders are depression and bipolar disorder. Symptoms vary by individual and can range from mild to severe.
A psychiatrist or other trained mental health professional can diagnose an affective disorder. This is done with a psychiatric evaluation.
Affective disorders can be disruptive to your life. However, there are effective treatments available, including both medication and psychotherapy.
Depression
Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities, and sometimes you may feel as if life isn’t worth living. Depression can affect your concentration, energy, appetite, and sleep. You may feel hopeless or helpless. Most people with depression feel better with medication, psychotherapy or both. Transcranial magnetic stimulation TMS is an FDA approved treatment for major depression covered by most commercial insurance plans.
Disruptive/Defiant Behaviors
Disruptive behavior disorders are among the easiest to identify of all coexisting conditions because they involve behaviors that are readily seen such as temper tantrums, physical aggression such as attacking other children, excessive argumentativeness, stealing, and other forms of defiance or resistance to authority.
These disorders, which include ODD and CD, often first attract notice when they interfere with school performance or family and peer relationships, and frequently intensify over time.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Excessive thoughts (obsessions) that lead to repetitive behaviors (compulsions). Obsessive-compulsive disorder is characterized by unreasonable thoughts and fears (obsessions) that lead to compulsive behaviors.
OCD often centers on themes such as a fear of germs or the need to arrange objects in a specific manner. Symptoms usually begin gradually and vary throughout life.
Treatment includes talk therapy, medications, or both.
